I've sold my car but the buyer has not collected it yet — when should I cancel my insurance?

What should you do?
- Agree clearly when ownership and responsibility pass to the buyer.
- Make sure the buyer has their own insurance before driving away.
- Tell your insurer when the vehicle has actually been sold and is no longer your responsibility.
- Consider statutory insurance requirements while a vehicle remains registered and not declared off road.
What can make a difference?
The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.
Coordinate the insurance end time with the actual handover rather than guessing.
Until ownership, possession and responsibility for the car have actually passed to the buyer, cancelling too early could leave a gap in cover. Tell your insurer the circumstances and confirm the appropriate cancellation time.
