Short answerIt depends on the insurer and policy. A total-loss settlement does not always mean the policy simply continues unchanged or that unused premium is automatically refunded.

What should you do?

  • Ask whether the policy ends after settlement or can be transferred to a replacement vehicle.
  • Check any time limit for adding a replacement car.
  • Ask what happens to instalments still due.
  • Do not cancel a direct debit without first understanding what is contractually owed.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Get the insurer's explanation in writing if the position is unclear.

Do not assume the policy automatically continues unchanged after a total loss

What happens to the remaining policy term, premium and any replacement vehicle can depend on the insurer’s terms and how the claim is settled. Ask the insurer what options apply before cancelling or arranging replacement cover.
