Short answerOften an insurer may allow you to retain the salvage, but it depends on the damage category, safety, policy and insurer. The settlement is normally adjusted to reflect the salvage value.

What should you do?

  • Tell the insurer early that you are interested in retaining the vehicle.
  • Ask what salvage deduction will be made from the settlement.
  • Understand the write-off category and whether the vehicle may legally and safely return to the road.
  • Check repair, inspection, MOT, V5C and future-insurance implications before deciding.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Do not repair or drive a structurally unsafe vehicle simply because you have retained it.

Keeping the vehicle depends on the insurer, salvage arrangements and the car’s status

Do not assume you have an automatic right to retain a written-off car. Ask the insurer whether retention is possible, what will be deducted from the settlement and what steps may be required before the vehicle can legally return to the road.
