I think my insurer's write-off valuation is too low — how can I challenge it?

Short answerYou can challenge a valuation by giving the insurer evidence that the pre-loss market value was higher. The Financial Ombudsman Service generally looks at market value immediately before the loss and considers valuation guides and other relevant evidence.

What should you do?

  • Check that the insurer has the correct make, model, age, mileage, specification and condition.
  • Gather adverts for genuinely comparable vehicles, while recognising advertised asking prices are not always final sale prices.
  • Ask the insurer to explain its valuation method and any deductions.
  • If you remain dissatisfied after the insurer's final response, consider whether you can refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Focus on evidence of market value rather than what you originally paid or what you still owe on finance.

A write-off settlement should be considered against the vehicle’s value immediately before the loss

If you disagree with the valuation, gather evidence for comparable vehicles and make your case to the insurer. Do not rely only on the price you paid or the cost of a replacement without showing why those figures reflect your particular car.
