Short answerSome insurers will insure a vehicle where the policyholder is not the registered keeper, but others will not or will impose conditions. You must accurately disclose the ownership, registered keeper and main driver.

What should you do?

  • Explain who owns the vehicle, who is the registered keeper and who drives it most.
  • Do not change these answers simply to obtain a quote.
  • If you mainly arrange insurance for your parent but they are the real main driver, ask the broker for an appropriate structure.
  • Check whether you have an insurable interest in the vehicle.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

A broker can be useful where ownership and driving arrangements are unusual.

Ownership and main use need to be disclosed accurately

Some insurers will consider cover where the policyholder is not the registered keeper, while others may not. Explain who owns the car, who is the registered keeper and who will drive it most often before arranging cover.
