If a named driver has an accident in my car, whose claims history does it affect?

What should you do?
- Tell the insurer exactly who was driving.
- Check whether protected no-claims discount changes the immediate discount but not the underlying claims record.
- The named driver should keep claim details for future quotation questions.
- Do not assume the incident belongs only to the person who was driving.
What can make a difference?
The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.
Claims history questions vary, so answer future insurers exactly as asked.
Ask the insurer how the claim will be recorded for the policyholder and named driver. The named driver may also need to disclose the accident when answering claims-history questions on future insurance applications.
