Short answerYes, but the learner must be properly insured to drive that car and the supervising driver must meet the legal requirements for supervision.

What should you do?

  • Arrange learner-driver cover or add the learner to a suitable policy before they drive.
  • Check any age, vehicle and supervision restrictions in the policy.
  • Make sure the car itself is roadworthy, taxed where required and has a valid MOT where required.
  • Do not assume your own policy automatically covers a learner.

What can make a difference?

The result can depend on your level of cover, exclusions, excess, information given when the policy was arranged or renewed, who was driving, and the precise circumstances. Two policies both described as “comprehensive” can still contain different terms.

Insurance must be in place before the practice drive starts.

The learner must be insured before practising

Being supervised does not itself provide insurance. Check that the learner is specifically covered to drive the car and that any conditions applying to learner use and supervision are met before the practice drive starts.
